The screener lists the US patents granted to Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Tesla in the latest issues of the Official Gazette, with title, filing date and technology field. The bars show how many patents the selected companies received in each weekly issue.

How the Screener Works

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) publishes the Official Gazette for Patents every Tuesday. Our daily data run reads each new issue after it appears. It first takes the list of all patent numbers in the issue, which gives the total for the share figures. It then reads the index of patent owners for the companies listed below and the front page of each of their patents, with title, filing date, application number and number of claims.

The filters work on these fields. Type separates utility patents, which protect a technical invention, from design patents, which protect the shape of a product. Technology field is the main classification. For utility patents it is the subclass of the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC), for example G06N for computing models such as neural networks; for design patents it is the US design class. The word filter searches the title and ignores upper and lower case.

The list covers the most recent issues. The bars cover up to 52 issues, which is as far back as the gazette keeps its issues online. The address of the page stores the current selection, so a link opens the same view.

What the Screener Does Not Show

Applications are not part of the list. The office usually publishes an application 18 months after its priority date, and only granted patents appear in the gazette. Patents at other offices, such as the European Patent Office, are missing as well.

The screener does not rate patents. It shows no citations, no claim analysis and no estimate of value, only the published title. A change of owner after the grant is not recorded either. Owners whose link to one of the seven groups we could not verify are left out.

Owners Counted per Company

The office names the owner at the time of grant for every patent, not the parent group. The screener counts these owners toward each company:
